Port version: 0.9.58 (first test version for AROS x86_64)
Requirements
- 64-bit PC with AROS ABI v11: AROS One 64-bit, AROS.games, or stock AROS v11
(2026.09)
by deadwood (axrt.org)
- Does NOT work on nightly builds of AROS pc-x86_64 from the
aros-development-team (ABI v1);
a separate package will be available for those
- Approximately 1.2 GB of disk space
- Files from the original Heroes 3 game (Complete or Shadow of Death)
Installation
1. Extract the archive, e.g., to Work:, and rename the directory to heroes3
2. Copy the Data, Maps, and MP3 directories from the original game to the same
directory
(next to the vcmiclient file)
3. Run the vcmi-settings icon (Play button) or from the Shell:
Stack 4000000
CD Work:heroes3
vcmiclient >RAM:vcmi_out.txt
If something isn't working, send the author:
- RAM:vcmi_out.txt (when run from the shell with redirection)
- userdata/VCMI_Client_log.txt
- AROS distribution and version, processor, amount of memory, graphics card and
resolution,
sound card
- if the game crashes: the contents of the Software Failure window (preferably a
screenshot after clicking More...)
If the game freezes on startup or has no sound, test it without sound
(in the Shell before starting):
MakeDir ENV:SDL2
SetEnv SDL2/SDL_AUDIODRIVER dummy
To restore sound: Delete ENV:SDL2/SDL_AUDIODRIVER
Settings: the vcmi-settings program (display, sound, language, log sending).
Manually: userdata/config/settings.json (resolution, full screen, language,
sound).
Default full-screen resolution is 800x600 (you can change the resolution and
display mode in vcmi-settings).
Known limitations of the beta version
- Tested in an emulator (QEMU): startup, menu, map, and character movement; on a
real PC
(Core i5): startup, menu, and gameplay work. Sound and networking have not yet
been tested
- Updating via vcmi-settings will only work once the x86_64 package is available
on the server
- Online lobby via TCP (default) or WebSocket; gameplay via TCP and hot-seat
- The "Direct" image mode from the 68k version does not work on AROS (always
SDL)
